Mount Vernon, from the monument north

The Washington Monument rising over Mount Vernon Place

What is open in Baltimore's Mount Vernon, and how late. The free Walters and the monument squares by day, then theater, jazz, Afghan dinner on Charles Street and bars that run to 1 or 2am, north through Station North to Old Goucher.

Updated Sep 28, 2026 · each stop says the day its sources were read, and what they left unconfirmed

Mount Vernon is where Baltimore keeps its art and its music, up Charles Street north of the harbor: the Washington Monument, the Walters, the Peabody, the city's theater and its symphony, all within a few blocks. The catch is the clock. The best of it is free and shuts at five, and what runs late is a ticketed room or a bar. This is for anyone who wants both halves, visiting for a weekend or living around the corner.

So it runs in the order of a day. The monument and the Walters first, while the doors are open and it costs nothing, then a show, dinner and the bars that stay up. After that it heads north, past the Station North rooms that open only when something is booked, into Old Goucher, where the night gets later, and ends at Penn Station, the way home. That last stretch is a longer walk than the map makes it look.

Before you go

  • Thursday is the night to come: the Walters stays open until 8, the Pop-Up Jazz Jam is out in a park, and from June to August there are free concerts in the West Square.
  • Monday is the hard one. The Walters, the monument, the Owl Bar, the Helmand, the Drinkery and Fadensonnen are all shut, and Mama Koko's is closed Sunday to Tuesday. Mount Royal Tavern opens every day, and the Motor House jazz jam runs on alternate Mondays.
  • Book the fixed points first. The Helmand takes tables through Resy, and An die Musik, Center Stage and the Meyerhoff open for their shows only, so hang the evening off whichever you have a ticket for.
  • From the monument to Old Goucher is a long walk up Charles Street. The free Charm City Circulator and the Light RailLink both stop at Penn Station, about halfway.
  • Driving: the Franklin Street Garage is $7 in the evening, and the Symphony Center Garage by the Meyerhoff is $15 on the day, less booked ahead. Old Goucher is street parking only, and the private lots beside Mama Koko's tow.

Mount Vernon Place and the Washington Monument

Start in the middle, because everything else on this list is measured from it. Four landscaped squares frame the first monument raised to Washington, with fountains and sculpture between them and the Walters and the Peabody on their edges, all free from dawn to dusk. The monument's gallery level costs nothing and the climb is $6, Wednesday to Sunday, 10 to 5. On summer Thursdays, June through August, free concerts fill the West Square, and the Monument Lighting on the first Thursday of December ends in fireworks. Climb first, while the light lasts, then cross to the Walters.

    The Walters Art Museum

The Walters is free every day it opens, and it fills three connected historic buildings a block from the monument. Plan around Thursday: it opens at 1 and stays open until 8, the only museum evening in this half of town, so you can go after work and still eat on Charles Street. Divine Inspiration is up until February 7, 2027, and there is regular evening programming besides. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Coming in a wheelchair, use the accessible Centre Street entrance.

    An die Musik LIVE!

For 35 years and more, this second-floor room in a Charles Street townhouse has been built around the music rather than a bar. The bill mixes Peabody students and players on the way up with national jazz names, general admission usually runs $20 to $35, and there are student tickets. It opens for scheduled shows only, so buy ahead rather than trying the door. By the venue's own word it is not accessible, being up in a historic townhouse, and it livestreams every show instead. Park at the Franklin Street Garage, $7 in the evening.

    Baltimore Center Stage

The state theater works out of an old seminary building on Calvert Street, and this is a season to see it: ten productions under the Tony-nominated artistic director Stevie Walker-Webb, three of them world premieres, one of which goes on to Off-Broadway after opening here. The building keeps each production's hours and goes dark between runs, so choose the show first and build the evening around the curtain. Assistive listening, large print and Braille programs, touch tours and free passes for personal care attendants are all offered. The garage diagonally across the street takes care of parking.

    BSO at the Meyerhoff

The Baltimore Symphony's home hall sits on the district's northern edge, and this fall its calendar reaches well past subscription classical: a Stravinsky and Prokofiev program, a Samara Joy gala, a symphonic Taylor Swift night. That range means everyone in a group can pick a lane and still share the evening. The box office keeps day hours, Tuesday to Friday 10 to 5 and Saturday noon to 5. The hall is wheelchair accessible with companion seating; ask for accommodations two weeks ahead. The Symphony Center Garage across the street is $15 on the day and cheaper booked in advance.

Dinner, then the bars that stay up

    Mount Vernon · Food · $$

    The Owl Bar

Dinner starts under the owls. This is the 1903 bar room of the old Hotel Belvedere, which kept serving as a speakeasy all through Prohibition, and the glass-eyed owls over the bar signaled when the liquor had arrived. The hotel is condos now, but the room still does brick-oven pizza and cocktails under the same birds: a destination, not a neighborhood tap. Dinner is 4 to 9, Tuesday to Saturday, and the bar runs to midnight Thursday to Saturday, a short walk from the Meyerhoff. Closed Sunday and Monday, which catches people.

    The Helmand

For a proper dinner, walk down Charles Street to the Helmand. Qayum Karzai's Afghan dining room has anchored this stretch since 1989, and with The Brewer's Art gone it is the food anchor of the neighborhood. There is a full bar, entrees run $20.95 to $29.95, and tables book through Resy, which is worth doing at the weekend. The kitchen goes to 10pm Tuesday to Saturday, late enough to eat after an early show, and 4 to 9 on Sunday. Closed Monday. From here, the Drinkery is a few blocks west on Read Street.

    The Drinkery

An everyone-welcome gay dive that has been pouring on Read Street since 1972 and calls itself one of the oldest alternative bars in Baltimore. The posted special is two Natty Bohs for the price of one, and the back room, The Other Side, is a small speakeasy for when you want to hear each other talk. When Leon's closed this summer, the Drinkery took on its karaoke and trivia nights and gave Leon's bartenders shifts, which tells you what kind of place this is. Mount Royal Tavern

The last bar is the one Baltimore calls the Dirt Church, where you drink under a hand-painted reproduction of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The beer is famously cheap, the crowd runs from MICA students to lifers, and it is unpolished on purpose. It opens 10am to 2am every day, so it is the answer on a Monday, when the Owl Bar, the Helmand and the Drinkery are all shut, and at 2am it outlasts every other bar here that keeps set hours. It sits on the Bolton Hill edge, a short walk up from the Meyerhoff.

    La Familia Soundstage

On the east edge of Mount Vernon, behind a strip of storefronts on Guilford Avenue, this is a hire hall, and the room is only ever what someone booked into it: Latin parties one night, comedy or spoken word the next. It publishes no hours and no program of its own, so come for a named night rather than the place. The one we hold is the Latin Coffee Party on October 11, noon to 5, 21 and over. Baltimore Improv Group

Up Charles Street in Station North, the Baltimore Improv Group has its name painted across the shopfront glass, a parklet out front and $10 tickets. Saturday is the fixture: BIG Time, at 8pm, interviews a different local guest on stage and improvises sketches out of the answers, which the theater bills as Baltimore's own Saturday Night Live. For $10 it is a fine way to meet the people who live here. There is no show on October 3. Fridays bring three one-hour shows back to back from 7pm, but only on the Fridays they program, and the gaps are long.

    Baltimore Pop-Up Jazz Jam

Free, outdoors and on Thursdays, this jazz jam lands in a different Baltimore park each week, run by the bassist Ed Hrybyk: musicians bring an instrument, everyone else brings a chair. It has played Mount Vernon Place, which is why it is pinned here, and Wyman Park Dell, Lake Montebello, the Rawlings Conservatory, Greenmount West and the Y Not Lot. The park is announced week by week, so we cannot give it in advance, nor a start time from the organizer, nor whether it plays through winter. Across Charles on the same stretch of 23rd Street, Fadensonnen is three things at one address: a courtyard beer garden, a tavern upstairs and a wine shop. The courtyard is covered and heated, so it works in November as well as June, and the food comes from Chachis, cooking in the courtyard rather than from a kitchen of the bar's own. On Sunday at 8pm there is live experimental music, a genuinely unusual thing to be able to count on. Weekday happy hour runs 5 to 7, and on Saturday it opens at 1pm. Closed Monday.
